Car VIN Identification with Machine Vision
A leading car manufacturer had a requirement to read the VIN number for each and every car running down their production line to provide tracking for the master control system running the line. Although this would seem to be simple, it posed its own challenges due to the fact that the VIN number is stamped into the metal which produces curved edges, and then the stamping is in-filled with a multitude of different colour paints. Following testing we found that a correctly applied Cognex InSight camera could execute the OCR task and so this was installed onto the line and interfaced to their pre-existing control system.
