We have executed a district heating project for a major client, this involving the automation and monitoring of multiple electricity generation sets, dual fuel boilers and biomass boilers. The system utilises a redundant pair of Siemens S7 400 PLCs, these in turn being connected to redundant pair of WinCC servers. There are multiple remote I/O stations, these passing the data back up to the PLCs via redundant Ethernet. There are multiple energy monitoring points where the consumption and generation of power is monitored together with the monitoring of the consumption of fuel. The complete scheme is integrated with energy consumers and generation devices being controlled to optimise the use of energy.
